Announcement to Grainger Engineering: October 2024

Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. After this date, there will be no further updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. To ensure that our systems remain secure and functional, all affected computers in the Grainger College of Engineering must be upgraded or replaced by the end of July 2025.

We are actively upgrading machines capable of running Windows 11 and have been replacing EWS lab machines. Our Desktop/Laptop Replacement Program (DRP/LRP) has been deploying Windows 11 capable machines over the last few years.

What Does This Mean for You?

Our project team has identified over 1300 computers within Grainger Engineering that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. These machines must be replaced, preferably by July 2025, to prevent any potential security vulnerabilities and disruption to Grainger Engineering activities.

Timeline: October 2024 - July 2025

We will be rolling out replacements and updates in phases from October 2024 through the end of July 2025. Your prompt reply to upcoming targeted messages about specific affected machines is vital to manage this transition smoothly.

Actions Requested:

  1. Watch for Targeted Communications: In the next few weeks, we will send targeted messages to specific individuals, research groups, and departments about impacted machines. These communications will outline which devices need replacement.

  2. Plan Ahead for Replacements: We encourage you not to wait until the next fiscal year to address this issue, as we may not have the capacity to deploy new machines at that time. Early action will ensure that replacements or upgrades happen on schedule.

  3. Options for Replacement:
