Thanks to funding from Grainger College of Engineering, wireless connectivity is expanding to more outdoor locations on campus north of Green Street. Engineering IT staff have been working with the Tech Services Networking teams since October of 2021 to increase the reach of wireless connections to cover 100% of Grainger College of Engineering outdoor spaces with solid wireless access.
Some popular locations that will see improved coverage include the patios around Engineering Hall, quad-side patios of Electrical and Computer Engineering Building (ECEB), Holonyak Micro and Nanotechnology Lab (MNTL) and Everitt Laboratory, the west porch of Materials Research Lab/Supercon, and the walkway/patio space between Newmark Laboratory/Yeh Center and the Civil and Environmental Engineering Building (ECEB).
The project is broken into phases, the first is focused upon locations adjacent to buildings that can be covered by access points attached to building exteriors. Some buildings were completed in late 2022 and are listed below.
This spring, you can expect to see additional work at Engineering Hall, Loomis Lab, Mechanical Engineering Laboratory (MEL), Grainger Library, Engineering Sciences Building (ESB) and Holonyak MNTL buildings to cover common outdoor gathering spaces. At Loomis Laboratory of Physics, the installation will cover the outdoor seating area on the southwest corner of the building. Likewise, the quad sides of Grainger Library and MEL, and the northeast patio area of MNTL, will see a boost in wifi coverage. A goal of this project is to cover the Bardeen Quad with continuous wireless connectivity.
Completed locations include:
- Southeast corner of Newmark
- West side of CSL
- Northeast corner of Siebel Center for Computer Science
- East side of Talbot
- Northeast corner of Everitt
- West side of MEB
- Southwest corner of Loomis
- West side of MRL
