EWS Linux Home Directory Update - Data Migration Beginning - October 24, 2013

Preliminary data transfers are beginning this evening to three Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers that have been configured as new NFS servers.  We are using rsync to copy the data to the new servers, both to avoid the issues we are having with NFS and to allow us to copy the bulk of the data while the old server remains in service.  Despite the performance issues with the current server, some students have been able to get some work done.

Once the initial transfers are complete we are currently intending to take the Linux clients (workstations and remote) completely offline overnight in order to perform a final rsync and to convert the clients over to mounting the new shares.  It is possible that this could be as early as Friday evening until Saturday morning but it could slip to a day later.  We will have a better estimate after we see what the performance is of this evening's data transfers compared to what we saw during limited testing.
